Birthstones – Mirthstones

I confess. All my life I have been jealous of those born in March, April, May and July. It has nothing to do with age. It has everything to do with color. I was born in November and my birthstone is either Topaz or Citrine. But, I longed for Aquamarines, Diamonds, Emeralds and Rubies. As I grew older, I researched birthstones and learned that, through the ages, birthstones have changed. For example, modern birthstones were officially adopted in 1912. Tanzanite was added as an official December birthstone in 2002.

The Ayurvedic birthstones go back as far as 1500 B.C. These birthstones come from Indian Medicine and Beliefs and go back to ancient India. The Mystical birthstones go back over 1000 years. There are also other birthstones of the ancient cultures of Arabia, Hebrew, Hindu, Italian, Poland, Roman and Russian. There are also birthstones of the Zodiac, Planetary Stones, and Talismanic Stones. All of this makes me very happy because who’s to say what your birthstone is? Pick your favorite! The following is a list of the Modern, the Ayurvedic, and Mystical birthstones:

Months Modern Ayurvedic Mystical
January Garnet Garnet Emerald
February Amethyst Amethyst Bloodstone
March Aquamarine Bloodstone Jade
April Diamond Diamond Opal
May Emerald Agate Sapphire
June Pearl(or) Moonstone Pearl Moonstone
July Ruby Ruby Ruby
August Peridot Sapphire Diamond
September Sapphire Moonstone Agate
October Opal (or) Tourmaline Opal (or)Tourmaline Jasper
November Yellow Topaz (or) Citrine Topaz Pearl
December Turquoise (or) Blue Topaz (or) Tanzanite Ruby Onyx

Before we get too excited and over analyze where we are on the chart, we should also consider that the astrological signs have their birthstones. Consider this, you are a November child. You should be a Scorpio with a birthstone of a Topaz, but if you were born after November 23, you are a Sagittarius and therefore, your birthstone could be considered to be a Turquoise. Are you confused? I was. And still am! The following are a list of the astrological signs, their ruling planet and birthstone.

Now you may be thoroughly confused, but don’t be. This is the exciting part. I believe that everyone should choose the stone that suits them, their personality and their needs. Stones have an energy all their own and sometimes we crave that energy. Let’s examine the color of the stones above and their meaning.

Blue

The birthstones that are blue in color can be Sapphires, Turquoise, blue Topaz, blue Chalcedony, blue Tourmaline, blue Zircon and Tanzanite. Moonstones are iridescent but can have shades of blue in them. Blue is the color of water and symbolizes the ocean, sleep, the sky and twilight. The blue stones have an ability to bring us peace, stability and harmony. They can be very calming.

Blue is associated with healing, the psychic powers, patience, confidence, happiness and loyalty. Please note that in some cultures, blue can signify sadness. This is where the expression “he is in a blue mood” comes from. In ancient Egypt the Pharaohs wore blue for protection against evil.

Aqua

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March. Paraiba, in the color of aqua, will also work as a birthstone for March. Aqua means water, the color which symbolizes youth and is associated with speech, communication, confidence, strength, and idealism. Many believe it can affect emotional healing and protection. It is also said to have a soothing effect. Aquamarine varies in color from blue-green to a light sky blue. Some people say that Aquamarine reawakens love in a tired marriage, so this would make a wonderful anniversary gift.

Green

Everyone knows that Emeralds are green and is the birthstone of May. Peridot is also green and is the birthstone for August. Green represents money, prosperity, employment, fertility, healing and growth. It symbolizes fertility. Many people believe it has a calming effect and it is believed that medium greens connect with nature.

Red

Both January and July have red birthstones. Garnet is the birthstone for January and Ruby is the birthstone for July. Red symbolizes health, strength, physical energy, sex, passion, courage and protection. Red is also associated with intense emotions. Valentine’s Day is always symbolized with the color of red for love.

Yellow

Topaz and Citrine are both yellow in color. They are believed to be the birthstone for November. The color yellow signifies intellect, philosophy, confidence, communication, eloquence and travel. It is symbolic of the sun and power of thought. Yellow is also associated with joy, happiness, optimism, imagination, hope and idealism.

Clear/White

The two months that have clear or white birthstones are April and June. April’s birthstone is the Diamond and June’s is the Pearl. White is associated with protection, purification and peace. It symbolizes the moon. White also represents humility, cleanliness, youth, innocence and birth.

Purple

Purple is the color of Amethyst and is the birthstone of February. Elizabeth Taylor wore a lot of Amethyst. This is because her eyes were violet and she was born in February. However, Elizabeth was a Pisces and the Pisces birthstone is the Aquamarine. The color purple symbolizes peace, power, healing, meditation, religion, wisdom, and spirituality.

Pink

Pink Tourmaline is the birthstone for October. The color pink signifies love, friendship, compassion and relaxation. Pink is a feminine color and is also associated with gentle emotions.

Multicolor

Many stones like Pearls, Opals and Moonstones come in a variety of colors. We are all attracted to different colors and should choose these kinds of stones based on what we like and flatter us. Moonstones, in particular, are fascinating. They are the birthstones of June and September in modern astrology. Their colors can vary from milky white to rich shades of blue with pink and greens running through them. If you want a Moonstone, check the many shades that are available for that stone. You will be amazed at their beauty.

Negative aspects of stones

I feel that I should share that I have given you all the positive aspects of each of the stones but, be aware, that in many cultures and countries, the above colors may mean something entirely different and may have negative connotations. That is why it is important to choose the colors that make you, the individual, feel good about yourselves.

Alternative birthstones

I knew a woman who would never wear sparkling, shimmering stones. She felt they did not flatter her. She chose instead the more opaque stones like turquoise and onyx. These opaque stones are considered to be alternative birthstones. So, feel free to go in that direction if the spirit moves you.

If you look at the birthstone chart, you will notice that there are alternative birthstones, such as Agate for May or September; Bloodstone for March or February; Moonstone for September or June and Jasper is the Mythical birthstone for October.

Opals

October babies have two modern birthstones with pink Tourmaline and Opals. The pink stones were covered above. Opals vary in color and can have pinks, blues, and even flashes of red. When choosing an Opal, choose the one that ignites your senses. There are also jelly Opals which go towards the yellow color. It is believed that Opals have a strong therapeutic value for diseases of the eye and aid the eyes and the mind. There are black Opals, which are deeper in color. There are also fire Opals in orange and cherry Opals in red. But, I have never seen these associated with any birthstones.

Bloodstones

Bloodstones are alternative birthstones for March and February. Bloodstones are an opaque stone. The color of a Bloodstone is generally green with red spots. Some are multicolored. They can be shiny and that is what you should look for when selecting a Bloodstone. Bloodstones are believed to be beneficial for creativity, strength, vitality and strengthening of the heart. Bloodstone is also known as the symbol of justice.

Agates

Agates are alternative birthstones for May and September. Agate is believed to discern truth and is a powerful emotional healer. Agates improve memory and concentration. It is also believed to prevent insomnia and ensure pleasant dreams. Agates are said to have a calming influence and to increase ones’ analytical talents. Agates come in many colors, so when choosing your Agate, look for the one that ignites your senses.

Jasper

Jasper is a unique stone for it comes in so, so many colors. It contains mineral oxides which gives it patterns that resemble landscapes and mountains. There are many different kinds of Jasper. Consider this: Jasper is the Mystical October birthstone, the Aries planetary birthstone, the alternate birthstone of Virgo and Aquarius. Legend has it that Jasper is said to bring joy, and help one sleep. Jasper is also said to guard against evil spirits, align all chakras and balance the yin yang energies.

Summation:

Now you know a lot more about what the colors mean and what the stones symbolize. But you still may be confused. To paraphrase my Uncle Dave, who always rhymed… birthstones smirthstones. We all have our favorite stones that we are attracted to or that we feel make us look better. I believe that is how we should choose the stones we want to wear. We should never feel trapped by what we are told is the stone for us. I have always been attracted to the aqua colors of March. That isn’t my birthstone. However, I’ve consoled myself with this thought: I was conceived in March, so why not go with the birthstone which symbolizes the month of conception! Now there’s an idea!

Perhaps your birthstone is not your favorite stone. Who knows? Perhaps it will be…sometime in the future.

Air Travel Tips For Families With Children

The best parents are the ones who adapt to having children versus using their children as an excuse for not doing the things they love.   Such as traveling.  So, to all of you parents who are traveling and bringing your bundles of joy with you, enjoy the journey!

Like everything else, the key to a successful trip is planning.  If you do your homework, and prepare the appropriate check-off list, you can have a stress free flight with your family.

Before you travel, remember two very important things:

1.  Be flexible; and

2. There is a big difference between an infant who cries and a child having a temper tantrum.  Passengers can forgive a crying infant.  They are not as forgiving when a child kicks the back of their seat or throws a fit, and Mom and Dad ignore the situation.

Now that you have decided to take this trip, it is time to get organized.  Remember, expect the unexpected.

Before purchasing your airline tickets, you should visit the airline websites and familiarize yourself with their rules regarding traveling with children.  Different airlines have different rules, so you may want to compare them before booking your flight.

When traveling with an infant (under 2 years old) most airlines will give you an option to purchase a ticket or allow your infant to sit on your lap.  Many airlines offer discount tickets for infants, but you typically cannot find this information online.  Contact the airline directly to inquire.  If you purchase a discounted ticket or decide to have your child travel on your lap, be prepared to provide proof of age, such as a copy of the child’s birth certificate.  Also, be sure to ask the airline if you can print the child’s boarding pass online.  Some airlines require that you pick-up the boarding pass at the airport after you have provided proof of age.   The baggage allowance is also different for a child who sits on your lap versus a child who has purchased a seat.  Knowing the difference may help you decide how you would like your baby to travel.

Be sure to label your child’s stroller, infant seat and any other similar infant item with your name and contact phone number.  There are restrictions on what type of strollers that can be checked at the gate.  American Airlines requires that all large, jogging, non-collapsible strollers and those over 20 pounds, be checked at the ticket counter. The best type of stroller to use when traveling is an umbrella stroller.

When you are choosing your seat assignments, please be aware that according to the FAA regulations,  no one under the age of 15 can sit in an exit row.  If an infant seat or child restraint device is being used, your child cannot occupy the row in front of or behind the exit row.

It is recommended that you visit the TSA website to familiarize yourself with the regulations  regarding baby formula, juice, baby food, medicines and other liquids.  This website also provides other information that will help you when preparing for your travels.  For instance, if you are traveling with a child with disabilities, there is a section that discusses how to make the experience of going through security go smoothly.  When you go through security, all baby equipment must go through the x-ray machine.  This includes baby carriers and baby slings.  Children under the age of 12 years old no longer have to take off their shoes when going through security.

Depending on how long your flight is, you may want to consider a red-eye flight.  These flights are normally very quiet.  Put the kiddies in their jammies and let them sleep through the flight.  A friend of mine once said that when she took a red-eye flight with her daughters, her oldest asked if they had taken off yet, when in reality they had just landed!  That’s a great trip!

Happy Travels!

Mirror Mirror On The Wall What Color Suits You Best Of All

Ok. The party season is here.  You have the perfect little sexy black dress to wear.  Since it is black, you believe that you can wear any accessory, or any color with it.  That isn’t necessarily true.  Most of us look better in gold or silver; warm versus cold.  It depends more on skin tone than hair, although hair can play a part.  Many people (women) know if they look good in reds, blacks, whites or royal blue.  These people are called Winters and these are the colors that will highlight their beauty.

Summers look gorgeous in pastel colors . . . pink, blue and lavender.  They usually have blonde hair and blue eyes, but not always.

I think the Springs and Autumns have the hardest time knowing their best color.  Autumns usually look good in greens, oranges, yellows and browns . . . the colors of Autumn.  A lot of the time, their hair is red and their eyes may be blue or brown.  But many times, redheads usually have very fair skin and hot orange can look too harsh.  Peach is a better option than hot orange.

So we come to Spring, with its crisp pinks, tourquise, blues and greens.  The colors for Spring are paler than Autumn’s colors, but much crisper and darker than Summer’s pale pinks and blues.

If you are not sure which colors look best on you, hold either gold or silver next to your face and look in the mirror or ask someone you can trust.  If you are a gold person, you will look better in the warmer colors, the colors with yellow in them.  Those who look better in silver, will look better with blue mixed into the basic color.  Now, let’s look at the colors themselves.

Red

Many women will say that they “can’t wear red”.  A lot of these women are redheads, but they can wear red.  It just has to be the right shade of red.  The color red can be either warm or cold.  You can tell whether the red is warm or cold by just looking at it.  It is very obvious if the red has yellow in it, because the shade of red will move more towards the orange family.  These are the colors of red that redheads can wear, if it suits their skin tone.  The color red with blue in it will be crisper and darker and many times it will even be called blue red.  All Winters look spectacular in the blue reds.

Blue

Many blues tend to go towards the lavender and cooler blue tones.  Blondes look especially beautiful in this color.  When the color of the blue has yellow in it, the blue will be much warmer and sometimes will go towards the turquoise family.

Pink

The color pink is exquisite, and for many women it is one of their favorite colors.  Pink can be bold or soft.  Hot vibrant pink is gorgeous on Winters.  It will set off their hair and skin.  However, if you need the warmer tones, never select hot pink, because this is the pink that has the blue in it.  For fairer skin ladies, and especially redheads, choose a pink lemonade shade.  This color of pink has a splash of yellow in it to warm it.

Green

Green is a strange color.  When I was younger, my mother dressed me in kelly green.  I thought it was garish on me, because of my skin tone.  When I was older, I chose the hunter greens and the mint greens because they complemented my skin tone.  My mother was also a redhead, but hers was not natural.  Her skin was darker and frankly, she looked good in every color.

How To Choose The Colors That Are Right For You

Hold colors in front of your face and you will see immediately which colors look good on you.  It is an instinctive feeling, but it is definitely there.  If you’re not sure if the color looks good on you, then move on to the next color.  There are too many choices to just settle.  Years ago, women had color draping parties. Consider having a draping party for you and your friends.  You will see which colors flatter your skin and hair.  It will make it easier to shop because you will know what to look for and it will help you understand why certain colors look better on you than others.  You will also find that when you wear the right color, your eyes will stand out and sparkle.

Aging

Aging.  We all do it.  It is how we do it that tells the story.  As I mentioned earlier, when I was young, I had bright red hair and very fair skin.  I looked good in golds, yellow and the warmer colors.  I wore a lot of black but ladies, never wear black up to your face unless you are a Winter.  Always show a little skin around your face if you are going to wear black and it is not perfect for your skin tone.  Frankly, all of us look good in black but make sure you lower that neck line to soften the black against your skin.

As I got older, my hair began to get white in it.  It was still red and my husband once said “the overall effect was still the same”.  But suddenly, gold did not look as good as it once did against my skin.  I suddenly found that I could wear silver better than I could wear gold.  My skin was still fair, but the gold was too harsh now.  So through the years, keep your eyes open and reevaluate what colors are most flattering on you.  What looked good on you at 20 may not look quite as good at 40 or 50.  This is also true with your choice of make-up.

The upside of aging, and yes, there are some, is that you get to try a variety of colors.  I can even wear some blues that I never would have worn when I was younger and my hair was so vibrant.

I am an artist now. When I put colors together that clash and do not look good, I suffer until I can fix it.  Have fun this holiday season when you go shopping. Think about the colors that flatter you, and the people you love.  Color drape yourself and your loved ones.  It is not hard to see what colors set off your beauty.  When you  wear something that looks especially good on you, people will gasp . . . seriously, because you look so good.  Unfortunately, the opposite is true too.

Tricks of The Trade

Make sure that your lipstick complements your outfit and doesn’t clash with it.

Smile.  It turns all of the lines upward.

Laugh. Because laughter keeps us young.

Backpack Backlash

Doctors have been warning us that heavy backpacks cause pain.  More often than not, it is children or young adults who use backpacks on a daily basis.  As they get older, the consequences of carrying these heavy backpacks on their backs are not completely known.  Common sense will tell us that it is better to travel as lightly as possible through this world.  If you notice your child is stooped over, or if they are complaining that their back hurts, this is an indication that some changes should be made.

The Bisadora Messenger Bag is ergonomically designed to be comfortable.  It is worn over the shoulder and rests on the front of your body, with a comfortable padded strap.  The Messenger Bag is a wise choice for a school bag to carry your laptop and other essentials.  It is also a versatile bag; it can be used for school, business, travel and everyday life.

Wearers of this bag enjoy the convenience of being hands free while they tackle other tasks such as texting, taking notes, shopping, or even going potty, pardon the expression.
